I think he felt unworthy of self love. Perhaps Ben's story hasn't ended and we may see more letters to answer questions that are yet to be asked.

Darkness in the sense that he didn't open up to others about his situation. Maybe he felt he won't be seen. It's like his tank was filled of emptiness. An inability to express for self.

I believe it drove Ben mad at least within his closet where he was most vulnerable. It plunged him into an endless mental wander. Questions birthed questions and for some reason he embraced darkness.
