God ESTABLISHED the covenant with the 12 sons, but he INITIATED it with Joseph:

Don't forget it was the promise of God to him that made him a prime minister which made his family (Israel) relocate to Egypt and that was when the covenant started to manifest, because the children of Israel started to multiply in Egypt.

2. Also don't forget that with the covenant came the promise of 400 years in slavery (the arrival of Israel into Egypt was the stage setter.)

3. Now let me also counter what you said on Joseph's story been aligned with the convenant. Truly God allowed those calamities to happen but it was not for the purpose you purported here.

God's purpose in the story of Joseph was to use the evil intentions of his brothers for good, ultimately preserving his family (Jacob's descendants) to become a great nation and through them, to provide a path for salvation for all people through the Messiah, Jesus.

2. So all 12 sons of Jacob became nations under Israel and multiplied the effect of the convenant which birthed "the many nations" of today....

Hence why God is sometimes refered to as the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob....

Mathematically! What happened between Abraham-Isaac-Jacob was Arithmetic Progress of the Convenant.

From Jacob to his 12 Sons is the Geometric Progression.
