Families like this at times usually create vulnerable narcissists, who are actually victims but would use that to manipulate others.

we don't need a perfect family, we need one that actually doesn't create a lot of trauma for their children, parents that find ways to manage their trauma even though it's hard

And the boy can be that parent, he is the victim, he has to accept that and still move on without hurting others.
