<p>I don't think people understand how deeply a difficult relationship with a mother can affect a girl's idea of herself, love, marriage, and even motherhood. When the first woman who is supposed to teach you what tenderness looks like makes you feel inadequate, you start questioning what love is supposed to feel like. You become scared of becoming her, while simultaneously longing for everything she never gave you.</p>
