<p>This was heartbreaking to read. The way the mother's desperation slowly turns into cruelty made the ending hit even harder. The imagery of the white paint cracking and running with her tears was especially powerful. A painful but important reminder of how poverty, greed, and broken systems can rob children of their innocence. Well written.</p>
