Oh Esther, How lovely that was to read. And the simple answer to your final question is "Vulnerability and the fear of being perceived as such", its why for every true romantic relationship, the idea is that we're being vulnurable to the other without fears.

I'll say a part of it stems from the fact that most people have had bad experiences with letting themselves be vulnerable...

Because vulnerability can be a means to an end. Not a happy ending though! We are raised to cover our nakedness even from those who explained nakedness to us. It's the same with being vulnerable. Also, not many people have experienced the strength and comfort from being vulnerable to the right people.
