How Much Would You And Your Spouse Or Partner Need To Earn Monthly To Feel Financially Comfortable As A Couple?

Tobi Igbinedion Co-founder @ TwoCents Lagos 1 year, 3 months ago

Hahaha. And I feel I am in a right position to answer this.

I'd answer in the reverse order...

What are the needs of a couple and their estimates. For a couple living in Lagos, you need the following:

- House Rent: N2m

- Basic Furnishing: N3-5m

- Car maintenance and fueling per annum: N1m

- Feeding per year: N2m

- Clothing and Miscellaneous: N1-N2m

Total: average of N10-11m/annum.

So, if each of the couple are not making at least 800k-1m each. They'd have to compromise on a bit of stuff.

Save to buy proo-wetin? You know I'm a Properties guy, there's a reason why most of the folks that buy the VI,Ikoyi, Lekki properties are diaspora folks, Tech bros, O&G or Politically affiliated people.

..ones, are super rare. Like your woman now. You don't know what you have fam. Well, I know you do. Please keep that woman baba.

From all you've told me..she's a gem fam.

But yeah, back to cost of rent and salaries. It's hard. Super hard.

Some are making it work, and kudos to them. May God keep helping y'all to figure it out.

Even that 400k I said, like both guy and girl are earning around 400k, still isn't easy.

I wonder how long it takes to save to buy property, vacay in a nice place...

Now while I'll admit that they're lots of insecure guys out there...women love to avoid admitting that they are hypergamous and it's hard for them to be attracted to or be with someone they perceive as less capable or of a lower status than them.

This is what eventually manifests as disrespectful behavior AKA the modern woman syndrome.

Someone would read this and think that "see these two broke niggas, just say y'all are broke" Loool. If only that were true.

The good ones, the truly good...

Braaahhh.

It's the "they don't know how to handle..." part for me. Lol.

That couldn't have been said any better.

See ehn, it's not in their blueprint, their psychy to be attracted to someone they perceive they have more status than...women are simply hypergamous, they "date up".

They need to see you as up there. Or else, problems fam.

Some would say that "Oh I'm not like that, it's the guy's insecurity disguising as masculinity", "men need to be more secure in who they are..."..

....

I just got off a call with someone that said "women don't know how to handle earning more than their man. And it's not like they want to be that way. But even they themselves, they won't know when they start to be disrespectful as a result of that".

Like I literally just had the call.

...and that's fine really. It's the female nature to be that way. But the big ask, is for more women to be reasonable, content and to stop comparing.

Not to justify being broke as a guy, absolutely not. But the dating and marriage market has changed mainly because of how much women have changed to have many unrealistic expectations.

Mehn. Hustle hard as a guy, get your stuff together and pray to God to find you a good woman.

Because mehn. Lol

The thing too is that, even the babes that earn well, and "are getting the bag".

They want a man that's earning more than them and can spoil them, their hypergamous nature will ensure that they are always attracted to a higher status man ... be that money, power, position...but mostly money.

So this isn't about "Oh these ones don't understand that some girls have their own money and are rich"...

..I totally understand that, but it doesn't change the fact that women are hypergamous.

No matter what, we'll always be judged by our abilities as providers (protectors too maybe).

I've seen how money "opened things that had been closed for years" ... and made people abandon their principles and values. It's crazy.

Not just babes, guys too.

But as per relationships, mehn, the burden is disproportionately on you as a man, now factor in all the changes sweeping the job market, etc.

Only God can help a man. Lol.

🤣🤣🤣.

No be lie baba. Na pure you talk.

It's crazy.

Some will start thinking..."Is this what they meant when they say marry potential?". Lol

The same babe that saw all the good things in you will now start seeing the glass as half-empty, all the reasons as to why she might have made a mistake by picking you....

...you now throw in all the things she's seeing on Social Media, making her wonder "God when?", comparing you to every rich guy she knows.

It's a harsh world for a man. Lol.

"Hating your partner and seeing them as the source of your frustration" is what many women are thinking right now...but they won't admit it 🙂

....recipe for frustration. For many, they'll just end up in a place where you start hating your partner and seeing them as the source of your frustration.

I'd advice anyone reading this not to do it. Lol

Save yourself the madness.

🤣 @ pre-marital relationship. I can hear the disapproval in those words.

Looool@shomolu.

Mehn. Its crazy out there. To put aside 100k - 200k after monthly expenses is unfathomable for certain people given their salaries.

Frankly I don't think anyone earning less than 400k should get married. Of course that's not some one-rule-fits-all guide to marriage, but really..don't try it. Lol.

Less than 400k, with no passive income source, side business or family support etc...is a...

To be honest? As a man if you're thinking Marriage or say you want to start out a pre-marital relationship...you should be able to have at least 100k-200k to put aside after your monthly expenses. And this is to achieve some basics like House Rent in say Oworonshoki, Shomolu, Ipaja.

But in the end, even if you're earning 150k to 200k a month and you want to get married, it's possible but you'd have e to be very very conservative.

So like, question is, for folks who are earning around 300k, how do they get by?!?!

One can say they should start small, get an apartment in a cheap(er)/low cost area, forget about getting a car at the start etc.

Next question would be, and this would clearly be different for each person, but like how much should someone (guy or babe) earn before they get into a serious, sustainable relationship?

Again, this will vary from person to person, but there's gotta still be some ball-park figure.

Lol Bro I kinda didn't want to scare myself, that why I was extra conservative on the fuel and maintenance.
