<p>....I know this is different from what you've spoken about. But, my fear is that the person who is seen as the "smartest in the room" or like in my own case "the most proactive" could be subject to scrutiny and spite.</p><p>What do you think?</p>

I definitely agree with this because there are people who are comfortable with the familiar and always resistant to change. Some of them might see you as a threat and in that situation, you have two choices: 1. relate with them on their level or 2. ignore them and focus on who wants to change and grow.
