A night at the bar

*This is just a short story i wrote and would really love peoples opinions on it"

Cool cold liquor poured down my throat as I emptied my glass.

I shifted my focus to the performer on stage.

A stunning woman in a white dress, with a demeanour and voice so enticing it had half the males in the crowd under a spell.

I shifted my attention again, but this time I was in search of someone.

John.

Who'd stepped away to go use the toilet.

A good friend of mine from way back, practically the closest person I've had in my life. Quite ironic considering this is the first time we've seen each other in years.

Family moved away when we'd just finished higher education. Thought the both of us were gonna be inseparable till that happened.

I let out a sigh, looking back down at the glass cup, revisiting past memories, regrets.

"Find some cash in there for me, hey?"

I look up at John, dressed in a white rolled-up shirt and beige vest. He was sporting a smile like back when he'd catch rabbits in the wild with his bare hands.

"Maybe I could get you a razor for that rat on your face," I snickered, making a remark on his well-grown moustache.

He clutches his chest as he sits back down beside me.

"Off, low blow there, berchap. Went straight to my heart."

I laughed as John told the waiter to get us two more glasses.

I stared back at the stage, the performer still singing her melodies.

"Ain't she pretty?" John remarked. "Probably would have a chance."

I looked at him with a straight face.

"What? I mean, look at you. Nice afro, well chiselled face, a good job, you clean up nice, and not to mention you're a kind-hearted man. I mean, you're paying for all our drinks tonight."

I gave a side eye at that last statement.

"I didn't agree to tha—"

"The point is, I find it weird you haven't gotten hitched yet."

I sighed. He was right. I should be in a relationship by now. I ain't getting younger, but no one's just felt right, not yet at least.

"Well, I'm fine as it is, man. I don't need to rush things."

I replied, making John sigh and change his focus back onto the stage.

"Guess I'm not one to talk either. I haven't really seen anyone in a good while. It's not like I don't want one, but I don't know, no one just feels right, ya know?"

I stared at John. Even after all these years, he still finds a way to feel so relatable.

The bartender brings our drinks over and sets them down on the table.

I pick both glasses up and hand John his, as he fixes his attention back on me.

"To us bachelors." I raise my glass in the air, John with a hearty laugh reciprocating the energy. "To us."
