Bollywood and Hollywood are the two most accepted “woods” in our recent civilization or at the very slightest, the top two movie initiatives in the world today. Precisely, it relies on how we measure that assertion. Nollywood is another initiative that appears to be passing Hollywood in terms of the fraction of movies it produces in a single year. How is this probable? It appeared to have arisen overnight. But did it? Let's ask this question, what is Nollywood and how did it evolve into the second-largest film industry in the whole world?
Before we move ahead on the list of Nollywood movies, let’s majorly take a peek at where they emerged from, to picture how the heck it became the second-largest film industry in the world. By the inner of the 20th century, African movies were being formulated, but in terms of the booming film industry, there wasn’t one, particularly distinguished from its Hollywood counterpart. Nigeria was a former colony of England and they had little interest in dramatic movies, especially stage acts. So when Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the filmmakers had to find s way to support their film crafts, lo and behold they did just that perfectly.
It wasn't until the 90s that the Grassroot movement in Nigeria originated and formed the Nollywood we come to appreciate today. The Southerners and their theatre conventions are major participants in the invention of Nollywood. Soon Benin's and Yorubas collaborated from town to town and village to village to put movies and plays together on stages.
They both joined forces and began filming these plays and turning them into VHS which was cheap, fast, and a way of sharing their stories to a larger audience. Despite the low quality, experience, and funds, film directors started evolving into using commercial cameras to shoot their videos for home viewing. Even with few lapses, the mythical-themed storyline hit the majority of movies.
