Faulty Traffic Lights

It’s strange, isn’t it,

how we hand people the power to wound us,

yet the blade often sits in our own hands.

If I let you hurt me,

wasn’t it really me

hurting myself?

It’s messy… tangled…

but in the end, the fault is mine.

I should’ve spoken,

should’ve met your eyes and confessed—

I love you.

But instead, I hid behind laughter,

masking truth with jokes like,

“Let me go before your boo finds me.”

And you—

you played the game too.

“Hold my hand,” you’d whisper,

and I did.

“Let’s get ice cream,”

you’d steal bites of my food and run away,

leaving trails of green lights—

but they flickered on a faulty post.

Green glowing,

yet red and yellow flashing beneath.

I wanted green so badly

I blinded myself to red.

You didn’t toy with my heart—

I did.

You never lied to me—

I lied to myself.

I never asked what you truly felt,

I only painted the answer I craved.

When desire is strong enough,

you start seeing phantoms—

love where none exists.

Red light. Green light.

I chose the color I wanted,

and so the fault is not yours.

It was mine,

all mine.
