Gen Z in Nija

Being a Nigerian Gen Z right now is like living two lives at once — the one people see online, all filtered and flawless, and the one that’s real, messy, and often lonely.😔

There’s this unspoken pressure to always be “on” — whether it’s your looks, your hustle, or your relationships. The aesthetic glow-up culture is everywhere: you’re expected to slay your fit, have your skin glowing, post those fire selfies, and show the world you’re thriving. But beneath that glow, there’s stress and a deep fear of not measuring up.☹️

The chase for perfection becomes a trap, making you question if the ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ are the only things keeping you afloat.🫠

Most of us barely care about politics anymore — and it’s not because we don’t care about the future. It’s because the system feels broken, distant, and maybe even designed to keep us out. Political apathy isn’t just a trend; it’s a survival strategy. What a world we live in. <del>“why should we invest your energy when the people in power don’t listen?” </del>So instead, many turn inward, focusing on what they can control, like their social circles, their style, and their personal dreams.🕶️👟🪡

When it comes to relationships, things get complicated. Fornication isn’t just a part of relationships anymore — it’s almost expected. It’s become a norm, and that pressure can confuse feelings. Sometimes it’s hard to know if what you’re sharing with someone is real love or just a moment caught in a world obsessed with validation.

The fear of being “left behind” or “not enough” makes it hard to set boundaries, so many end up pretending everything’s okay, even when it’s not💔. Heartbreaks are common, but they’re often hidden behind perfectly edited photos and viral TikToks, Snaps and Insta posts and reels.

Happiness, for many Nigerian Gen Zers, is this elusive thing. We’re bombarded with images of what success and joy are “supposed” to look like, but when you peel back the layers, you find a lot of numbness and loneliness. Many of us are struggling silently, tired of the performance, craving real connection but scared to show our true selves. The social pressure to “be okay” and “look happy” makes it even harder to be honest.

But here’s the truth: despite all this, there’s a quiet strength in our generation. We’re learning to be vulnerable, to admit that it’s okay not to have it all figured out. We’re redefining success on our own terms — not just through followers or fame, but through genuine moments, mental health awareness, and real conversations. It’s messy, it’s raw, and it’s imperfect — but it’s ours.

So if you ever feel overwhelmed by the world, remember: you’re not alone in this.

There’s power in being real, in sharing your story, and in choosing your own path. The future might be uncertain, but we’re here, and we’re ready to rewrite the rules.🫶🏻😊

                                                             Amirah ^_^
