Greatest singers series: Part 1: Unlearn To Learn.

On the 22nd of September 2025, I was privileged to travel to Lagos, a state located in the western part of Nigeria once again. Only this time it wasn't for a visit or sight seeing. It was for a competition I've been training for few weeks after the year began.

‎

‎I learnt a lot throughout my training sessions which lasted for nine (9) months. Nine (9) months of vocal warm-up, raising my yah yah ya, avoiding ice cream, oily foods (to some extent), avoiding starchy foods, carbonated drinks and wrapping almost every training session with scratchy or sore throat.

‎

‎During those nine (9) months, I was humbled. I had to unlearn to learn what I thought I knew. I was trained to use musical vocabularies whenever I wanted to talk about music. I learnt about vocal techniques like the crescendo, glissando, vocal octaves, amongst others.

‎

‎Just when I thought I was good to go, I was informed that I had to study other musical gurus. The likes of Kimberly Boyce, Adele, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and of course Patti LaBelle (Queen of Glissando). I had to start from the scratch because I was told that I needed to work on my chest voice.

‎To be honest with you my dear readers, I struggled with gaining my chest voice for Seven (7) good months.

‎

‎I was used to singing with my head voice for fourteen (14) years of my life. I've been singing since I was five (5) especially in churches. I had to learn to sing with a chest register and my mixed voice. I figured out one of the reasons I struggled with this was because I was TONE DEAF.

‎

‎Tone deafness isn't an insult. It's a term used to describe a person who can't pick up a note easily or at all. Yes I was tone deaf for a while, still am but it's something I'm working on.

‎

‎My vocal coach told me that I'm able to pick things quickly but not notes. For example, when I hear an artist riff and run, I'm able to do the same thing but when the pianist strikes the same key on the piano I'd sound out of place. Let's say an artist like Adele, I've always been able to hit her vocal range to some extent and my vocal coach noticed it.

‎

‎I was also told to find my own voice. I was told to stop trying to sound like Adele and sound more like myself. I was told to it's okay to want to do the vocal acrobatics they do but I shouldn't try to sound like them. I was told to recreate the sounds they released each time they sang (another struggle) I was used to 'trying' to sound like Adele and the rest and funny case is that...I still wasn't able to use my chest voice.

At some point, I was told I have a sharp vocal range and if care is not taken, I could break glasses with my voice (lol). After eight months of unlearning to learn, my evaluation was this.

‎

‎I am now able to use my head, mixed, balanced and chest register. I can pick up few notes making me partially tone deaf. I can sing a Celine Dion's song without any stress (still working on Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Kimberly Boyce though). I can riff and run without stress, my breathe control have never been better and I'm working on my whistle register. All in all I couldn't do any of this before and even if I did, I had little to no knowledge about them.

‎

‎Ever since then I've always had big respect for my fellow singers. Anyways that's all for now, look out for the next part. (The big stage.) I can't wait to share it with you all. Yes it's about the competition. Hehehe.

Catch you later. ✌🏽

‎

‎
