IN EVERY SEASON
<p><strong>I don’t know if it’s right to call you my best friend,</strong></p><p>but I know this,</p><p>you are close to me.</p><p>You are a part of my life in ways that feel steady and sure.</p><p>They say we should be more,</p><p>that a man and a woman standing this close</p><p>must be headed somewhere else.</p><p>But I tell them, softly, clearly:</p><p><em>you are my friend.</em></p><p>And that has been enough.</p><p>More than enough.</p><p>Because I’ve built friendship with you,</p><p>and that is a beautiful thing</p><p>not a doorway, not a waiting room,</p><p><em>just something whole on its own.</em></p><p><em><br/></em></p><p>Sometimes, I think about the future</p><p><br/></p><p>about the day you love someone</p><p><br/></p><p>and call her your partner,</p><p><br/></p><p><em>and watch you say “I do.”</em></p><p>I know I’ll be happy for you.</p><p><br/></p><p>I’ll make room for her in my heart.</p><p>Still, I wonder what will change,</p><p>whether I’ll have to step back,</p><p>quietly, carefully,</p><p>so you can give her all your devotion.</p><p>I don’t ever want my presence</p><p>to feel like a question in her mind.</p><p>That is when I’ll miss you the most</p><p>when I want to call,</p><p>to laugh,</p><p>to do the simple things we’ve always done,</p><p>and realize the rhythm has shifted.</p><p>What if she doesn’t understand our friendship?</p><p>What if you don’t want the same closeness anymore?</p><p>I know my heart may ache then.</p><p>I’ll long for you.</p><p>I’ll miss you deeply.</p><p><br/></p><p>Still</p><p><em>you are my friend.</em></p><p>Very close.</p><p>And I know we love each other,</p><p>not loudly,</p><p>not possessively,</p><p>but honestly.</p><p>Our friendship may change,</p><p>and I may not know how it will feel,</p><p>but I’ll always want your happiness</p><p>more than my own ease.</p><p>And I know this too</p><p><br/></p><p><em>I will find my own love.</em></p><p><em><br/></em></p><p>A love that chooses me fully,</p><p>that holds me without question,</p><p>a love I can give my whole heart to, and receive the same in return.</p><p>Even then, I know we’ll miss each other.</p><p>We’ll still reach out</p><p>not to pull each other back,</p><p>but to remind ourselves</p><p>that we mattered.</p><p><strong>And in every season,</strong></p><p>I hope our friendship remains</p><p>a quiet place of love, peace, and joy</p><p>where growth abides,</p><p>not because nothing changed,</p><p>but because we chose to love well.</p><p><br/></p><p><em><strong>Because you will always be my friend.</strong></em></p>
