It's a Good Thing It's Gone

I did something today. I killed it — cut it out bit by bit until I was sure it was gone. It deserved it.

All the years I fed it, I couldn’t get it back. The satisfaction of its death was unimaginable.

I called it different names, glorified what aimed for my life. I didn’t truly see it. I didn’t see its shape. It was glittering, and I was blind.

It had arms, guns, knives, bombs — it did not look nice. But I drew a smile on its face, dusted it with glitter, and entertained it.

Oh how naive I must have been, until I finally realized. I had lost things. Things I once had were gone in a blink.

“How could this be?” I thought. “I let no one in. For a while it was just me and IT.”

Then it dawned on me. I asked the glittery thief what it had done. It said, “You let me in because you thought I was comfort. I never lied about what I was — yet you clothed me pretty, named me, fed me. So I grew. You never really saw me. You never knew I was low self-esteem.”

As tears streamed down my face, I killed it. It deserved it.
