Mental Health awareness:We also have a part to play

10th of October 2025 – World Mental Health Day

A day set aside globally for mental health education, advocacy against social stigma, and the promotion of awareness about issues surrounding mental health. Many measures have been put in place to ensure that the world understands mental health–related conditions and how to approach them.

However, it is quite unfortunate that many people still do not see the importance of mental health awareness, especially in African settings. They often equate every mental health issue with insanity, forgetting that depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and even lack of adequate rest also contribute to mental health challenges.

There is also the stigma surrounding those who battle these conditions. They are discriminated against, misunderstood, and treated as outcasts in society—sometimes leading them to lose hope and, in extreme cases, end their lives.

It’s high time we became more empathetic towards people battling mental health–related conditions. Families should provide more support and love to their loved ones who are also battling silently.

We should be actively involved in creating awareness against social stigma and take time to personally educate ourselves on the various mental health conditions so we can have a better understanding.

We also have to take better care of ourselves—prioritize rest, practice healthy habits, and speak up immediately whenever we notice any warning signs.

We can change the narrative of mental health if only we try.

Happy World Mental

Health Day! ✨
