Never The Twain Shall Meet (Despair for the Silent Witness)

I’ll admit, I once relished countless “what-ifs” starring just us two—

Pink + White playing on repeat—y’know, the whole package.

Catching them boys take slice after slice of her attention once prompted me to move,

But now, I just sit back at the sight of it all and twiddle my thumbs.

Because I never want to compete for her affection, much less the ghost of a friend.

Ahh… there it is. A hint of negative thought,

Spreading like rot on old fruit.

Call it repugnant if you must,

But I find it… wretched to seek a banquet in a room where every guest has already taken their fill.

Yours truly is no wretch after all, is he?

We play our parts well—she the innocent, I the friend.

But at our table, the aforementioned ghost sits between us.

An interloper laden with the baggage of a sordid past.

I begrudge the very space he takes.

One of the few instances where curiosity flaunts its double-edged blade.

Sometimes, I wish I didn’t know so much…

NO!

I truly wish that there was nothing to be known in the first place.

I’m disillusioned now, but why do I feel this way, still?

And what do I do about the resonant Pink + White

From a scratched vinyl I struggle inadequately to discard?

Why does this heartbreak have to be the order of my day?

Gawd … what I’d give to stop feeling so lovelorn.

Hate to say it, but she’s been my drug for far too long.

You see, my fondest reader…

A meeting of these two souls is a tragedy in waiting,

Born of a history she doesn’t realize yours truly has uncovered.

P.S. I almost regret that she ever met you, dear friend.

For though it was short-lived, you had the grace to call her yours—and I will always be envious of that.

I don't envy how it ended, but I suppose all stories, even the best ones, must eventually… end.
