Older Men Marrying Young Girls: Love or Control?

When a man who is in his 40s or older decides to marry a teenager, should we really call it a marriage to partner or a marriage to control? One will eventually become the predator while the other becomes the prey.

What do you seem to need in a woman that will make you leave mature women for a young girl who doesn't even know the direction her life is going? A young girl who hasn't figured life out, a young girl who doesn't really know what she wants for herself. I think that's it— a girl who doesn't really know what she wants for herself. A girl that can be controlled, someone they can always tell what to do, and she does it. But these men don't seem to know that things will eventually change.

That same girl you have been controlling, that same girl who has been doing whatever you want and taking all the things you do to her, will eventually grow up to become a woman. She will become more mature, wiser, and more experienced. At a point in her life, she will realise that she is not supposed to remain in the place you kept her. She will begin to see that there is more to her, that there are more things she can become, and that she deserves more. That girl you used to see as stupid and foolish will one day become sensible and understand the things you thought she would never know. Time has a way of opening people's eyes, and maturity changes the way they see themselves and the people around them.

A man who decides to marry a teenager or a girl who is so much younger than him should always understand that they are not at the same stage of life, and working together will be difficult. Marriage has a purpose, and both couples have to work together to achieve that purpose. The girl in question has not yet experienced life or become as wise and sensible as you are, talk more of doing life with you. That man should be ready to take the girl almost as his daughter because he will be teaching her a lot of things. Instead of just playing the role of a husband, you will now be playing the role of both a husband and a father. In the long run, you can become exhausted because that is not what you bargained for. Marriage should not feel like raising a child when what you actually wanted was a life partner.

Then you begin to see situations where the man insults his wife for knowing nothing, looks down on her, and treats her as though she is less than she is supposed to be. Instead of encouraging her to grow, he reminds her of everything she doesn't know. That is not the kind of environment anyone should have to live in.

If you are a mature man, go for a mature woman. If you are still a young girl who is a teenager— focus on your life. A teenager has no business getting married. Even as a lady, if you haven't built anything for yourself, if you have nothing you are working towards, then you have no business rushing into marriage. Build yourself first, know yourself first, discover what you want out of life before making such a life time decision because whoever you marry should align with you and your visions in life.

A man who is old enough to be your father cannot offer you the same kind of partnership that someone in your stage of life can. Too often, those kinds of men want you for what they can use you for or what they can get from you, not because they are in love with you or truly see you as an equal partner. Always remember this. Be with someone you can build a life with, not someone you will build while losing yourself. A healthy marriage should help both people grow, not leave one person shrinking so the other can remain in control.
