OUR EARTHLY COMPANIONS

Do we know who they are? They are all around us, watching over us, they are our 'protectors'.

Yours can be a dog, a cat, an owl or even a lizard. I know you might be thinking, "why would she write about animals?". It's because I always feel connected to animals. As bizarre as it may sound, I also feel connected to chickens too.

To be honest though, I love dogs more. They are very compassionate, considerate, adorable and protective of their owners. The privilege of being a dog owner makes me feel proud any day, any time. I can remember when I lost my first dog named Terry to poison. It was such a painful thing to watch my mother dig his grave in our garden. Funny enough, I can still remember exactly where he was buried. Another loss came again. I lost my second dog to kidnapping. Cody was such a beautiful soul, very cheerful, calculative, tolerant, nice and thoughtful too. We all loved him and he would forever remain in our hearts.

You know, others might put it weird but I do talk to them, you know? I talk to all my pets like they are humans because I know they are listening. They can hear us loud and clear. My dog Iyke, an American Eskimo, so full of hair, can be quite stubborn and selfish at times, but he still listens. I understand him and he understands me too. He knows when I'm down and when I'm up.

Let me share one experience with you. We once owned a goat called 'Southi'. We trained him from when he was a kid and he grew up well too. We trained him like we train dogs, taught him how to sit, instruct him to go to the backyard. Goats are very stubborn, yes, but Southi was different — maybe because he grew up with Terry. Him and Terry were like brothers, a weird relationship, right? We groomed him till he was ripe to eat. Honestly, my parents were pretty much hesitant to kill him and eat him, but it had to be done because that's why they got him. It was so hard for them that they had to call someone else to do it. We were all inside and couldn't watch. Even Terry was chained to the backyard so he wouldn't see the whole process, but trust me, for some days, he was very dull. He knew he had lost a brother. Iyke also acted cold and alone too when Cody was kidnapped.

It's so painful to see dogs or skinny-looking animals on the roadside. I always say something: "Never own a pet if you know you cannot afford to take care of them, both physically and emotionally." Remember how I said I love dogs most especially — a cat named Pierre charmed me. He is now my new pet where I am. A stray cat who found a new home. He is so cute and he loves me a lot too. I can tell 'cause he runs to me anytime he is in trouble. I love carrying him, petting him, feeding him and cuddling him. I defend him with my life. I can feel his presence anytime, anywhere, and I'm sure it's the same for him too.

Animals are the greatest companions anyone could ever have. Their loyalty, sometimes, is more than that of humans. They would rather die than for their owners to. In all that you do in this life, never mistreat any animal, no matter what. Even if you want to kill a chicken, you must be gentle about it. There's a reward for kind hearts towards animals.

PEACE OUT.
