Our Quiet Forever

The rain hit the window of our small house, a steady sound that usually would have made me feel small and lost. But tonight, our living room was filled with the warm glow of soft lights and the calm, steady presence of John.

I watched him as he moved towards me, a smile on his face, ready to dance. It was hard to recall the person I had been before him a woman so broken by past pain that I’d forgotten how to breathe without feeling a weight in my chest.

When we first met, I was like a ghost, just drifting through days that felt like weeks. Then came John. He didn't try to fix me with big words or promises. Instead, he simply held my hand and stayed with me while the hard times tried to pull me under.

"You're quiet tonight," John said, as he took my hand and gently pulled me into a dance.

"Just thinking," I replied, as we swayed. "About how far we've come. About how much everyone said we wouldn't last."

I thought of the talk, the mean looks from people who thought I was too broken to be loved, or that he was too good for me. We had faced those hard times together, standing strong.

"Let them talk," John said, his voice low and steady, which always managed to calm my racing heart. "They don't know what it's like to find a home in another person."

I leaned my head on his shoulder as we danced, feeling the familiar comfort of his presence. Even after all this time, just being near him gave me butterflies in my stomach , the same feeling I had the very first time we met.

"I used to think I was only made of my mistakes," I whispered. "But you saw the good in me."

John held me closer as we moved, his hand tracing my back. "I didn't see mistakes. I saw someone beautiful. And I'm just happy to be with you."

Outside, the wind continued to blow, but inside, our world was quiet and safe. In our life together, we had built something that couldn't be broken, a love that kept us safe and carried us through anything.

"I love you," I said, the words feeling new every time I said them.

"Always," he promised. "Forever and then some."

And in that moment, the storm outside didn't matter at all. All that mattered was the warmth of his hand in mine, the rhythm of our dance, and the beautiful, quiet life we had built together.
