REFUSING TO DIE

I complain.

I complain.

Not because I am ungrateful,

but because I am human.

I complain when the road feels long.

I complain when my feet are tired

of pretending they are not.

I complain when prayers feel like echoes,

returning late

or returning different

from what I hoped for.

I complain because effort does not always bring reward.

I complain because good hearts still get bruised.

I complain because doing the right thing

does not always protect you from pain.

That is my complaint.

It is honest.

It is real.

But I breathe.

And in that breath, gratitude lives.

If I can complain, I am alive.

If I can still feel pain, I still care.

If I still care, then something in me has refused to die.

If I still care, then something in me is still fighting.

If I still care, then something in me still believes

that this story is not finished.

Something in me is still standing.

Something in me is still hoping.

Something in me is still choosing tomorrow

even when today is heavy.
