STILL WAITING

The air held its weight differently, heavier, expectant.

The hallway seemed to fold back on itself, shorter now, narrower, yet somehow the walls had grown colder.

A floorboard creaked upstairs; soft, hesitant, like someone trying not to wake the house itself.

The mirror blinked, or so I thought.

Something moved behind it.

Not a shadow,

Not a body,

But a shift.

A hesitation of light and shape, like air folding around a presence.

The lights dimmed again. The hallway stretched once more.

A door whispered against its frame.

Opened slightly. Closed. Reopened.

Nothing emerged.

And yet the carpet told a different story. A single footprint, larger than the rest, freshly pressed against it

Closer to the bedroom now.

From the corner of vision, something lingered. Watching. Still forming.

Not moving toward.

Not moving away.

Just...waiting.

The floor beneath the bed moved. Not the bed, the floor. A subtle rise and fall.

A heartbeat that didn't belong to me.

A step. Not taken, but felt.

The reflection in the cracked mirror no longer matched reality.

And when my eyes dared to scan the ceiling, the ceiling itself seemed to tilt, a slight angle that shouldn’t exist, impossible in form of teaching but undeniable in perception.

Silence.

The door opened again.

The hallway was empty.

The carpet lay smooth, untouched.

The floorboard upstairs didn’t creak.

The mirror reflected only the familiar room.

Even the air had stopped holding its weight.

And yet, the sense of being watched didn’t leave.

It lingered in the space between breaths, in the pause before a heartbeat, in the feeling that the house had simply… remembered something that had never happened.

Or had it?
