Teach Me How "NOT" To Fish

You see ehn… I’ve always believed in that famous wisdom: “Teach me how to fish…” — until shark nearly bite my destiny. 😭😭

It all started one fine Tuesday morning. I was feeling very entrepreneurial. John Oyinloye — my friend and chief trouble manufacturer — called me and said,

“Emmanuel, we don’t need anybody to show us how to do this sales thing. Let’s DIY it!”

I should have known that “DIY” in John’s mouth means Do It Yourself — and Destroy It Yourself.

Next thing, we’re in my room writing cold emails like Shakespeare with a data plan. No templates, no guide, just vibes and WiFi. We sent out 50 emails that morning. By evening, the only reply we got was from Gmail saying, 'Message undeliverable.’

Three weeks later, John is still refreshing his inbox like it’s a crypto chart.

He turns to me, eyes red, and says, “Bro, maybe our clients are fasting from opening emails.”

I said, “John, at this point, even the Holy Spirit no go reply us if we send like this.” 😂

But John being John, he doubled down. He said, “No, no, no! I don’t need help to close deals. I got this.”

Next thing, the client ghosted him.

The same man that said he doesn’t need help is now in our group chat asking,

“Guys, how do you follow up when they stop picking your call?”

Bros, follow up ko… follow down ni!

That’s when it hit me: there’s no award for “Most Independent Sufferer.”

Sometimes, collect fish and rest.

Not every day, “teach me how to fish.”

Because sometimes, the river get crocodile wey no dey appear for YouTube tutorial.

Mentorship, sales training, and communities exist for a reason.

It’s not laziness. It’s leverage.

When person wey don sabi the river say, “Come chop fish,”

no dey form Steve Jobs — just sit down, eat, and ask for the recipe later.

So abeg, if you’re like John Oyinloye trying to DIY your way into greatness, pause.

Ask questions. Network.

Sometimes, all you need is someone to connect you to your next big client.

Because in sales, information and connection is currency.

And the faster you get it, the faster you cash out.

So yes, learn how to fish — but if person wey don catch shark say “come chop,”

abeg, no use pride do diet. 😭😂

Come chop fish now ooo… before shark chop your future. 🐠

©️ Emmanuel Daniji || 2025

Read || Understand || Nurture

RUN with it....
