The cost of silence

The Cost of Silence

It started with a simple complaint. A young woman named Ada told her friends that a man at work had been making unwanted comments and touching her whenever he got the chance. Instead of taking her seriously, some laughed and told her, “Don’t mind him. He’s just being playful.” Ada became quieter. She stopped speaking up and began avoiding places where she might meet him.

Months later, another woman experienced the same treatment. She also reported it, but nothing was done because everyone had become used to ignoring such behavior. What seemed like a small issue had slowly turned into a painful reality for many people.

Nonchalance toward harassment can destroy confidence, relationships, education, careers, and even a person’s sense of safety. Victims may suffer in silence, blaming themselves for something that was never their fault.

Sometimes, the greatest harm is not only the harassment itself, but the silence and indifference that allow it to continue. Listening, believing victims, speaking up, and taking action can make a difference. No one should have to suffer simply because others chose not to care.
