THE FIRST TIME.

I didn't know it at the time.

I thought love lived inside the rhyme

of poems read, of songs that swore

it came like thunder, not like more.

But you sat quiet in the room,

your back against the afternoon.

You didn't speak. You didn't try

to prove you loved me with a lie.

You simply stayed. You poured the tea.

You let the silence sit with me.

And when I spoke half-raw, half-true

you didn't fix it. You just knew.

That was it. No crash. No flame.

No one to blame, no one to name.

Just someone in a faded chair

who looked at me like I was there.

The first time love felt like a home.

Not something earned.

Just something known.
