The Lion of Veronya II: Dark Roar

The two commanders descended on the Bridge where Adinoyi stood in wait.

The battle had begun on beast back with Balogun leaping up on his beast descending with a mighty downward swipe of its claws. Adinoyi's lion leapt away. The lizard's claws, sharp as iron struck the hard wood, carving out pieces. Murtala came from the sky sweeping in with a strike of his sword barely missing Adinoyi's head. The bat veered over the Niger river, turning around and returning for another strike. Adinoyi drew out his sword shielding his face from the edge of Murtala's blade. The bat glided away over the river, going under the bridge and emerging from the other side. The second time Murtala didn't come charging in.

The bat stood afloat in the air with its wings flapping and its mouth wide open. The bat gave out a faint screech which slowly and gradually grew louder. Suddenly, a thunderous blast of sound burst from its mouth, causing cracks in the bridge and the river beneath to ripple violently. Adinoyi pulled the reigns of his lion rearing its head and its fore legs up. It's mouth drew open and it let out a deafening roar with massive power overpowering the bat's scream. The bat struggled to stay afloat as the winds its wing rested upon shook violently. The roar had enough power to send the bat flying away a great distance. By the time the bat steadied and regained balance, Murtala found himself all the way back to the serpent's neck. The battle had become one-on-one and Adinoyi knew then he had to deal with Balogun before Murtala re-entered the fray.

The two beast locked eyes. A brief period of silence ensued. All that could be heard was the rippling of the waves from the river beneath. Adinoyi's beast blasted a second roar, lesser in power from the last, raising a cloud of dust from the bridge surface. The dust settled and Balogun and his beast had vanished. Where could they have gone? Adinoyi wondered, with eyes peered. Balogun leapt from Adinoyi's back. The lizard had crawled upside down underneath the bridge re-emerging behind him. Adinoyi couldn't turn his lion in time as the lizard's razor claws dug into the lion's skin in a ferocious slash. The lion roared in pain, blood pouring from its deep wound.

The lizard charged with jaws wide open. The lion evaded, and the jaws clasped with enough force to crush a large rock. Adinoyi struck the beast but his blade merely bounced off and the beast was unfazed. Its scale covered skin was harder than steel. The lion was injured and in pain and winced and roared frantically. Adinoyi struggled to steer its reigns. Balogun saw that as an opportunity and gave chase. The lizard leapt, it's claws readied for another attack. Unable to control the beast, Adinoyi jumped off the lion and found himself midair beneath the lizard, his face to its stomach. Though the lizard's back was covered in thick scaly armor, its belly had no such protection. Adinoyi dug his blade into the lizard's soft stomach and dragged the blade down to its tail. The beast landed on the ground with a thud, it's entrails pouring out, a puddle of green blood forming beneath it. The two men rose up with weapons in hand.

Adinoyi wielded his famed sword, _Black Roar_ which was sleek with blood. It was a large two handed finely forged blade of black steel with a bronze pommel in the shape of a lion's head. Now locking eyes, Adinoyi saw in full view the mountain that was Balogun the iron bender. He was large and muscled like a bull with skin as dark as coal. His bald head, clean shaven face and Iron-black skin glistened under the sunlight like lustrous steel giving his body a metallic sheen. He was bare-chested with beaded belts wrapped across his waist, stacked one atop another over a red and gold _Shokoto_ trouser. He was armed with a large mace, the very weapon that earned him the name, the iron bender. Steel shattered like glass when met with the force of his blows.

The two men charged and their weapons clashed with a deafening clang. _Black Roar_ cried in anguish from the weight of the hammer. Adinoyi staggered for a moment but returned immediately with a downward strike which met the steel handle of the hammer.

“You're strong” Balogun had praised upon discovering Adinoyi`s ruse “And you're clever as well. You're a brave warrior to think you could face the likes of us by yourself” The men backed away

“Well young warrior, let's see if this gamble of yours will bear fruit”

Adinoyi grinned in ecstasy. It was not every day you found yourself facing a fighter of such echelon. Adinoyi had triumphed against every foe that had stood before him in all battles he took part in. It mattered not whether Veronya came out the vanquished in battle, Adinoyi would always return unscathed, even in defeat. Now he found himself in one-on-one combat for the first time ever and against no ordinary foe. He could still remember the excitement he felt that moment, thirty five years after the fact.

The warriors danced to the song of steel as the bridge swayed beneath their feet. Blow after mighty blow, and the iron bender's mace failed to bend the _Black Roar_. Balogun increased the force of his swing but Adinoyi matched him strike after strike. The iron bender grew desperate, his forehead dotted with beads of perspiration. He gripped the handle of the hammer with bone crushing force, his sturdy biceps tensed and hard as stone and threw a mighty vertical swing. The face of the mace kissed Adinoyi's head gear and smashed through the bridge beneath, wood scattering around like shattered glass. Before he could raise the weighty mace, Adinoyi's swing of _black roar_ had slashed his chest down to his stomach, snapping the belts on his waist, glass beads scattering and dropping into the Niger. Balogun crashed to the floor, swimming in a bloody pool.
