The Little Things That Hold Everything Together

Before this experience, I used to think progress was loud. I thought it showed up in big achievements, big offices, big decisions. But I learned something different progress is often quiet. It lives in small actions done consistently and correctly.

In Nigeria, we see the results of systems every day in traffic flow, in electricity supply, in organized offices, even in how files move from one desk to another. When things go wrong, we complain about “the government” or “the system.” But being inside the system made me realize something powerful: systems are not magic. They are built and maintained by ordinary people doing their jobs well or not doing them well.

What truly captivated me was understanding how one small delay, one careless mistake, or one person’s negligence can affect so many others. At the same time, one dedicated individual can quietly make life easier for hundreds of people without ever being noticed.

This changed my mindset completely. I became more intentional about time, about responsibility, about how I handle even “small” tasks. Because in everyday Nigerian life, from keeping appointments to respecting procedures, from doing business honestly to showing up prepared, the little things are what hold everything together.

I realized that change does not always begin at the top. Sometimes, it begins with how seriously I take my own role, no matter how small it seems.

And that insight will stay with me long after this experience is over.
