The Only One Who Stayed

Oh Mummy, my Mummy-o,

My champion with the tickly toes and the super-strong hug,

I’m twenty now—see how tall I’ve grown?

But I’m still just your messy, little baby-bug.

Remember when you carried me, and it hurted so bad?

You bore the big-big pain just to see my face,

And even when I’m naughty or I make you sad,

You’re still the only person who can win the race.

When the world got scary and the people went "shoo,"

And they locked their doors and they walked away,

There was only one person who stayed in the room,

Only one Mummy-o who whispered, "It’s okay."

I fought such big monsters, Mummy, dark and mean,

The kind that make your heart feel heavy and grey,

I was ready to quit, to just leave the scene,

To lay in the dirt and just wither away.

Everyone gave up. They said, "He’s too broken to fix,"

They took all their kindness and packed up their bags,

But you stayed right here through the stones and the sticks,

When my spirit was nothing but old, dusty rags.

If not for you, Mummy, I’d be gone, I’d be lost,

I’d have let the cold shadows just swallow me whole,

But you didn't care about the pain or the cost,

You poured all your light right into my soul.

I’m fighting these battles, Mummy, big ones today,

Trying to be a grown-up, trying to be brave,

But if I win a gold star or I finally find my way,

It’s your name, your name, that I’m going to engrave.

You’ll be the first one I run to, the first one I kiss,

The first one I tell, "Look! We did it, we won!"

Because without your "I love you," I wouldn't exist,

I’d be a dark little star without any sun.

So I’m talking to God now, in a very small voice,

Saying, "Please, God, can You hear me tonight?

I know You have angels and plenty of choice,

But please keep my Mummy right here in my sight."

Don't take her away yet, don't let her go home,

I have so many treats I still need to buy,

I want her to see me when I’m sitting on my throne,

Before she goes flying way up in the sky.

I’m crossing my heart, Mummy, look at my hand,

I’m going to be the biggest in all of the land.

I’m making a pinky-promise to the stars and the moon,

That my "Thank You" is coming, and it’s coming real soon.

But listen, God, I’m being daring and bold,

Don’t You reach for her hand, don’t You do what You’re told!

Don't You take her to Heaven to sit on Your knee,

Not until she has seen what she’s made out of me.

I’m holding her skirt-tails so tight in my fist,

She’s the only reason I even exist.

I’m daring the world and I’m daring the sky,

I won't let a single more tear hit her eye.

Stay with me, Mummy, don't go toward the light—

I’m your little soldier, and I’m winning this fight.
