The Road To Umuadike:The First Conflict

Chapter 6

The First Conflict

It was a morning thick with heat, the kind that made the earth crack and leaves droop. Under the big iroko tree, the elders had gathered, as was their custom, to discuss the village’s affairs.

Chijioke arrived with unusual confidence. The road, the market, and Nnamdi’s school had given him new ideas, and he no longer hesitated to speak aloud what he thought was best.

Elder Ikenna leaned on his staff, eyes narrowed.

“Chijioke,” he said slowly, “you speak as if the village belongs to you already.”

Chijioke did not bow. Instead, he gestured toward the path where traders had arrived that morning.

“Elder, the world comes to us whether we like it or not,” he said. “We cannot hide in shadows of the past. We must act, or Umuadike will be left behind.”

A murmur ran through the crowd. Some younger men nodded; some elders tightened their lips.

“What you call progress,” Elder Ikenna replied, voice low but sharp, “can also become ruin. Roads and coins bring strangers, and strangers bring forgetfulness. You chase novelty, but what of our roots?”

Chijioke stepped closer, his voice rising.

“Our roots are here, yes,” he said, “but roots without growth become weak. We cannot fear every change that passes our path.”

The tension was thick enough to taste. Even Papa Ugo, leaning against the tree with his usual half-calabash, stopped laughing.

“You two argue like two bulls over one yoke,” he muttered. “Soon someone will get hurt—or the goats will run away.”

But his words barely touched the crowd.

Finally, Elder Ikenna’s gaze swept over everyone, commanding silence.

“Chijioke,” he said, “you may act for yourself, but not for the village. You will plant your ideas where you can, and we will see what blooms. But understand this: not all that is new deserves a place beside the ancestors.”

Chijioke lowered his gaze, knowing the elder had won the argument in front of the assembly, but he did not feel defeated. A spark had been lit, one that could not be easily extinguished.

By evening, the market had new energy, the children played with renewed imagination, and the elders whispered privately among themselves. The conflict was not resolved—it had only begun.

And somewhere, Papa Ugo laughed quietly to himself. “Ah, the world changes, but fools and wise men argue the same way,” he said, before taking a slow sip of palm wine.

Christian Divine miracle

Next part out on the 11th of April 2026
