THE SILENT SACRIFICE – A SOLDIER’S STORY

In the noise of our daily lives the traffic of Lagos, the laughter in our homes, the celebrations during festive seasons there is a quiet presence we often forget: the soldier.

While we sleep peacefully at night, someone else stays awake.
While we complain about the heat, someone stands under the scorching sun in full gear.
While we argue about politics, someone risks their life to protect the same country we criticize.

A soldier is not just a man or woman in uniform. A soldier is someone’s child. Someone’s parent. Someone’s spouse. Someone who once had simple dreams to live safely, to grow old peacefully but chose instead to stand between danger and the rest of us.

In Nigeria, from the troubled regions battling insecurity to disaster rescue operations during floods, soldiers are often the first to arrive and the last to leave. They do not ask for applause. They do not demand recognition. They simply serve.

And service is not easy.

It means missing birthdays.
It means celebrating holidays in forests instead of with family.
It means carrying not only weapons, but the weight of responsibility for millions of lives.

Respect for soldiers should not only come on ceremonial days or during parades. It should live in our everyday conversations. It should show in how we speak about them, how we treat them, and how we value their sacrifices.

Because patriotism is not just waving a flag, it is honoring those who defend it.

Before we judge, let us remember:
Freedom is expensive.
Peace is costly.
And someone is paying for it often with their comfort, sometimes with their life.

To respect a soldier is to respect sacrifice.
To respect a soldier is to respect Nigeria itself.
