<p>The room was silent except for the soft sound of paddles being raised.</p><p><br/></p><p>“35 million.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“40 million.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde’s ears rang.</p><p><br/></p><p>He couldn’t move.</p><p><br/></p><p>Couldn’t think.</p><p><br/></p><p>His own name echoed in his head like a death sentence.</p><p><br/></p><p>“…Tunde Okafor.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked at Amara again.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>No emotion.</p><p><br/></p><p>No regret.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just that same cold smile.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then suddenly—</p><p><br/></p><p>The lights flickered.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just once.</p><p><br/></p><p>But Tunde noticed.</p><p><br/></p><p>And so did Daniel.</p><p><br/></p><p>Across the room, Daniel’s eyes locked onto his.</p><p><br/></p><p>Now.</p><p><br/></p><p>That’s what the look said.</p><p><br/></p><p>Now or never.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde forced himself to breathe.</p><p><br/></p><p>Slow.</p><p><br/></p><p>Controlled.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then—</p><p><br/></p><p>He raised his hand slightly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Excuse me…”</p><p><br/></p><p>The room went quiet.</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara’s father smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Yes?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde swallowed.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I… I need the bathroom.”</p><p><br/></p><p>A few guests chuckled softly.</p><p><br/></p><p>The father nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Of course. Daniel, show him.”</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>The moment they stepped out of the room, Daniel grabbed Tunde’s arm.</p><p><br/></p><p>“We don’t have much time,” he whispered.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Where’s the exit?” Tunde asked quickly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel hesitated.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then shook his head.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You can’t just run.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde frowned.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What do you mean?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel leaned closer.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Even if you escape…”</p><p><br/></p><p>His voice dropped.</p><p><br/></p><p>“They’ll still find you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde’s heart pounded.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Why?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel looked at him with something close to pity.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because once you’re chosen…”</p><p><br/></p><p>“…you don’t belong to yourself anymore.”</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel suddenly turned and pushed open a hidden door along the hallway wall.</p><p><br/></p><p>It creaked open.</p><p><br/></p><p>Darkness.</p><p><br/></p><p>Cold air rushed out.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde hesitated.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What’s down there?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel’s voice shook.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Proof.”</p><p><br/></p><p>They stepped inside.</p><p><br/></p><p>The door shut behind them.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>At the bottom of the stairs…</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde froze.</p><p><br/></p><p>Chairs.</p><p><br/></p><p>Rows of them.</p><p><br/></p><p>Metal.</p><p><br/></p><p>Strapped.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some empty.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some…</p><p><br/></p><p>Not.</p><p><br/></p><p>Men.</p><p><br/></p><p>Like him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sitting still.</p><p><br/></p><p>Eyes open.</p><p><br/></p><p>But empty.</p><p><br/></p><p>Breathing…</p><p><br/></p><p>But gone.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde stepped back in horror.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What did they do to them?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel whispered:</p><p><br/></p><p>“They take the body…”</p><p><br/></p><p>“…and leave the mind trapped.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde’s chest tightened.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel pointed to a corner.</p><p><br/></p><p>A screen flickered to life.</p><p><br/></p><p>A video played.</p><p><br/></p><p>One of the “guests” from upstairs…</p><p><br/></p><p>Now sitting in a chair.</p><p><br/></p><p>Doctors surrounding him.</p><p><br/></p><p>And in front of him—</p><p><br/></p><p>A man.</p><p><br/></p><p>Begging.</p><p><br/></p><p>Crying.</p><p><br/></p><p>Saying:</p><p><br/></p><p>“Please… don’t take me…”</p><p><br/></p><p>The screen cut to black.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel looked at Tunde.</p><p><br/></p><p>“That’s what’s next.”</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Suddenly—</p><p><br/></p><p>A slow clap echoed behind them.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde turned.</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara stood at the top of the stairs.</p><p><br/></p><p>Smiling.</p><p><br/></p><p>But this time…</p><p><br/></p><p>It wasn’t fake.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was worse.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was knowing.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You really thought Daniel was helping you?” she said softly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde’s blood ran cold.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel stepped back.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silent.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ashamed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara walked down the stairs slowly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“He always does this,” she continued.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Gets attached.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde looked at Daniel.</p><p><br/></p><p>Confused.</p><p><br/></p><p>Betrayed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara smiled wider.</p><p><br/></p><p>“But it doesn’t matter.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She stopped in front of Tunde.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because you’re already sold.”</p><p><br/></p>
