The Weight of Expectation

I was given a present—

wrapped in duty and responsibility.

Aesthetically beautified dreams and hopes,

finalized with a ribbon that read:

"Be perfect."

From the very beginning—

a life I hadn’t even lived yet.

My first food was:

"Learn. Be strong."

Garnished with:

"Don’t disappoint us."

A dress, woven in:

"You are a girl—know your place."

So I wore every sentence like charms.

They followed me

everywhere I went.

I dragged my feet

through uneven ground

and remembered—

it was forbidden to fall.

The weight of being "enough"

gave me a hunchback...

Or maybe it humbled me.

I couldn't even remember

how tall I used to be.

I became what I needed to be.

Used the weights to gym.

Somehow—

balancing my wants and needs.

Their hopes became bricks.

And somehow,

they shielded me from thieves.
