The first time I noticed him was on my sister’s birthday.

The living room was full, voices overlapping, laughter spilling into every corner, music humming softly beneath it all. People moved around with plates in their hands, greeting one another, celebrating her.

But somehow, in the middle of all that noise, the room quieted for me.

Because I saw him.

He stood near the far side of the living room, half-leaning against the wall, speaking to someone with that calm, effortless ease that some people just have. Like the world never rushes them. Like time slows down around them.

And suddenly, I couldn’t look anywhere else.

There was something about him.

Not just the way he looked, though he looked… unfairly good, but the way he existed in the room. Quiet confidence. Gentle presence. The kind that doesn’t demand attention, yet somehow holds it.

My sister’s friend.

Older.

Older than someone who should be making my heart behave like this.

Still… my eyes kept returning to him.

Every few seconds.

I would glance away, pretending to be interested in a conversation, pretending to laugh at something someone said.

Then my eyes would wander again.

Has he looked at me?

No.

Still not looking.

And then…

Wait.

Did he just…

Yes.

For the briefest second, his eyes lifted and met mine.

Just a glance.

Nothing more.

But my heart reacted like thunder had cracked open the sky.

And just as quickly as it happened, it was gone. His attention returned to the conversation, like nothing had happened at all.

Maybe he didn’t really see me.

Maybe I was just another face in the room. Another guest at my sister’s birthday.

But that single moment…

That single, fleeting glance…

Somehow felt like the beginning of something.

Or maybe just the beginning of a very dangerous crush.

I suppose we’ll find out.
