Wants.

Men always wanted something from her.

It wasn't a difficult thing to learn. Everyone wants something from you, but men--men felt entitled to it.

The wants weren't always huge, they were small and reasonable even. Sometimes delivered with a polite smile. A man asking for her number on the bus, or her father asking for a woman's touch to decorate his office.

Her husband was no different, his wants seemed never-ending. Dinner ready. Legs up. Agreement. He wanted agreement, possession and he knew of his privilege to it.

Kunle was a well of wants, and she became the river he drank from. He wanted peace, so she stayed silent. He wanted her body, so she knew to open her legs.

She had tried refusing him before. It had ended in a lesson on men's strength. She remembered thinking in a distant way, how easily he could kill her. Not because he wanted to, but because he could. The knowledge stayed with her, even as he forced his way into her.

Even strangers felt entitled to her. The man in the keke who kept his hands on her laps for too long. Her boss, whose eyes laid openly on her chest, or her assistant whose head followed the switching of her hips.

She knew men always wanted something from her. She knew how powerless she would be if they decide to take it.

She knew that her safety depended on how merciful men felt that day. And she understood, that the most dangerous thing about men was not what they wanted, but how easy the world forgives them for it.

If there was one thing she could change, it would be how merciful the world was to men's crimes.
