When the plantain goes from golden brown to burnt offering

It was a regular Saturday evening in Abuja- just yesterday by the way, the sound of generators filled the air as AEDC did not feel the need to restore the power.

I was craving something light, the something light being fried yam and plantain, at exactly 8:32 pm.

It was not an unexpected craving, I tend to want the most random things at the most random times. Like on Tuesday by 2:47 am, when I felt like eating jollof rice and suddenly woke up.

I set off to the kitchen; equipped with my phone's flashlight, from my room, and saw my mom just moving around in the kitchen. She saw me and didn't even question why I was out at this time, everyone - including the neighbours, knows I'm always randomly hungry.

I cut up a small quantity of Yam and one stick of plantain- I usually eat in small portions, hence why I'm always hungry, to satiate my cravings.

I decided to fry the plantain first cause I felt it won't take too much time like the yam. I put the plantain into the pan with hot oil, about 11 pieces (yes I counted), and let the satisfying sound of plantain frying fill my ears.

I was already smiling at this point, reaching for an egg to go with my meal. I turned the plantain over and saw it had a perfect golden brown colour and felt very accomplished.

I decided to leave the kitchen since it was quite hot to feel some of the cool air from my room. What a mistake that was.

The moment I returned to the kitchen to check on my golden brown plantain, I saw that they had taken on a new face and I nearly wept but I didn't want to disturb my mom as she was in the middle of her group prayers.

My once golden brown plantain had gone from golden brown to burnt offering, the black colour that usually shows that plantain is overripe.

I took one to taste and while it wasn't any different, I just kept shaking my head and wondered how the plantain could change so quickly.

I fried the yam and it came out well, as well as the egg but this isn't the point.

The point is that the plantain underwent a face lift and didn't inform me on time😔

Still ate the plantain, and even with its questionable exterior, it still tasted good.

Moral of this story, stand in front of the plantain when frying. I have surely learnt my lesson.
