A little sleep 3

Chibogu kept on knocking but there was no response, her heart began to race as she unlatched it and pulled it open.

What she saw made her freeze.

“Ikenga!”

Her brother lay sprawled on the ground, motionless. Beside him was a bottle of Sniper, empty.

Her hands trembled. “No… no, no, no…”

She dropped to her knees and shook him gently. “Ikenga! Can you hear me? Wake up!”

There was no response.

Panic seized her chest. She screamed for help, her voice piercing the stillness of the night.

“Help! Somebody help me!”

But no one came. Their house stood alone, far from the other villagers. The silence that followed felt heavier than her fear.

Without thinking twice, she jumped to her feet and ran.

Barefoot, she raced toward the express road, her breath uneven, her heart pounding wildly. The distance felt longer than ever before.

“Please, God… don’t let him die,” she whispered as she ran.

When she finally reached the road, she flagged down a passing taxi.

“Please, help me!” she begged the driver. “My brother is dying!”

The driver hesitated for a second, then nodded. “Enter.”

They sped back to the house, lifted Ikenga into the car, and drove straight to the hospital.

The next two days felt like a lifetime.

Machines beeped. Doctors moved in and out. Prayers were whispered without ceasing.

Chibugo barely slept. She sat beside her brother’s bed, holding his hand.

“You’re not leaving me,” she murmured. “Do you hear me? You’re not.”

On the second day, the doctor finally came out with a faint smile.

“He’s responding,” he said. “He will live.”

Tears streamed down her face. This time, they were tears of relief.

“Thank you, Jesus…” she whispered.

When Ikenga finally opened his eyes, he found his sister staring at him.

“You scared me,” she said softly.

He looked away, shame written all over his face.

“I’m sorry,” he muttered.

Chibugo sighed, her voice gentle but firm. “Sorry is not enough, Ikenga. You have another chance now. Don’t waste it.”

She paid the hospital bills and even settled the debt that had pushed him into despair.

A few days later, she sat beside him.

“I’ve spoken to my husband,” she said. “He wants you to come and live with us in the city. There’s nothing for you here anymore. You need a fresh start.”

Ikenga hesitated. “Do you really think I can start again?”

She smiled. “Yes. But you must choose to live.”

A week after he was discharged, Ikenga left the village with his sister.

The city was loud, busy, and unfamiliar but it was also full of possibility.

Chibugo’s children welcomed him warmly.

“Uncle Ikenga!” they would shout, running into his arms.

For the first time in a long while, he felt like he belonged somewhere.

He joined his brother-in-law in business, learning quickly and working diligently.

“Good,” his brother-in-law said one day. “You’re improving fast.”

Ikenga nodded. “I won’t waste this opportunity.”

And he didn’t.

Two years later, he was ready. With support, he started his own business on the outskirts of town.

Life had changed.

Ikenga now woke up each day with purpose. He began attending church regularly, finding peace in a place he once ignored.

One Sunday, as he sat quietly after the service, he bowed his head.

“Thank You for not giving up on me,” he prayed.

Because once, he had almost given up on himself.

But now, he was living proof that a second chance can change everything.

He smiled as he remembered the advice of his father before his death "A little sleep".At this father will be proud of me.He said to himself.
