AN UNEXPECTED FRIENDSHIP

This is based on a true life story.

There is an experience I will never forget. I'd like to share it with you.

When I gained admission into an institution, I was excited because I believed it would be the beginning of a better future. However, I quickly realized that life on campus was not as easy as I had imagined.

I came from a humble family. My parents worked hard, but money was always a challenge. Sometimes I attended lectures without eating breakfast because I wanted to save the little money I had. I wore the same clothes repeatedly, and although I tried to stay confident, some students noticed and laughed behind my back.

One of those students was a boy named Tunde. He always seemed to have everything—expensive clothes, a new phone, and enough money to spend freely. Whenever he saw me, he would make comments that embarrassed me in front of others. I never replied because I believed arguing would only make things worse.

One day, our lecturer announced a group assignment that would count for a large part of our final grade. To my surprise, I was paired with Tunde.

Neither of us was happy. We barely spoke to each other during our first meetings. He believed I had nothing to contribute because of my background, while I felt he was too proud to listen to anyone.

As the weeks passed, life became more difficult for both of us. My father could no longer send me enough money because business was slow. There were days I thought about dropping out of school. At the same time, Tunde stopped attending classes regularly. I later discovered that his father's business had collapsed, and his family was facing serious financial problems.

For the first time, I understood that money does not protect people from hardship.

Instead of celebrating his downfall, I visited him in his hostel. We talked for hours. He apologized for the way he had treated me, and I admitted that I had judged him too. That conversation changed everything.

From that day on, we became true friends. We studied together, shared lecture notes, encouraged each other, and even shared meals whenever one of us had food. We stayed up late preparing our assignment, determined not to let our struggles defeat us.

When it was time to present our work, our lecturer praised our effort and teamwork. We earned one of the highest scores in the class. More importantly, I had gained something I never expected—a genuine friend.

Today, whenever I remember those difficult days, I realize they taught me one important lesson: you cannot judge a person by what they have or how they treat you at first. Everyone is fighting a battle you may know nothing about.

Looking back, I am grateful for every struggle because those experiences made me stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. They also gave me a friendship that I believe will last a lifetime.

Moral: Sometimes, the people who seem to be against you today become the friends who stand beside you tomorrow. Hardship has a way of revealing a person's true character.
