BEFORE YOU GET MARRIED , KNOW YOUR SHOE SIZE !

Before You Get Married, Know Your Shoe Size

There is something strange about the way many of us approach marriage.

We spend months, sometimes years, looking for “the perfect person.”

The perfect man.

The perfect woman.

Someone who will always understand us, never annoy us, never disappoint us, always communicate perfectly, have the same interests, agree with our opinions and somehow know exactly what we need without being told.

Then we get married and discover something our wedding photos didn't tell us:

We married a human being.

And human beings are complicated.

They have moods. Weaknesses. Fears. Habits. Past experiences. Different expectations. Different ways of communicating. Different ideas about money, family, sex, parenting, religion, career and even what it means to show love.

So perhaps the question shouldn't be:

“Have I found the perfect person?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“Have I found someone whose imperfections I can live with, whose values I respect, whose character I trust, and with whom I am willing to grow?”

Think about shoes.

Not every beautiful shoe is your size.

You can admire it. You can love its colour. You can even afford it.

But if it doesn't fit your feet, walking in it every day will eventually become painful.

Marriage is somewhat like that.

Some people are wonderful people—but they may not be wonderful partners for you.

Someone can be attractive, successful, educated, religious, financially comfortable and genuinely kind, yet still be fundamentally incompatible with you.

And that is why knowing yourself is almost as important as knowing the person you want to marry.

What do you actually want from marriage?

Do you want children? How many?

Where do you want to live?

How do you handle money?

What are your expectations about gender roles?

How important is religion to you?

How do you settle disagreements?

How much involvement should extended family have?

What does fidelity mean to both of you?

What happens when one person loses their job?

How do you behave when you're angry?

Can you apologise?

Can you forgive?

Can you disagree without destroying each other?

These aren't romantic questions.

But they are marriage questions.

And sometimes we spend so much time asking, “Do I love this person?” that we forget to ask, “Can we actually build a life together?”

Love matters enormously.

But love alone doesn't automatically solve incompatibility.

Neither does chemistry.

Neither does sex.

Neither does a beautiful wedding.

And certainly not a relationship status on social media.

Marriage will have difficult seasons. Two imperfect people trying to build one life will inevitably disagree sometimes.

But let's also be clear about something:

“Marriage is hard” is not an excuse for abuse, humiliation, manipulation or constant disrespect.

There is a difference between going through a difficult season with someone you love and living in a relationship that continuously destroys your dignity and wellbeing.

The goal isn't to find a marriage without problems.

The goal is to find a person with whom problems can be faced without becoming enemies.

So before you say, “I want to get married,” perhaps ask yourself another question:

Do I know my shoe size?

Do I know my values?

My boundaries?

My weaknesses?

My expectations?

My deal-breakers?

The kind of home I want to build?

And most importantly, do I know the kind of person I can realistically build that home with?

Because choosing a spouse isn't simply choosing someone you want to spend your happiest days with.

You're choosing the person you will meet on the days when neither of you feels particularly happy.

Choose wisely.

Know your shoe size.

And remember: you don't need a perfect marriage. You need two imperfect people who are willing to love intentionally, communicate honestly, grow together and keep choosing the marriage.

So, what matters more when choosing a life partner: love, compatibility, character or shared values?
