Bluebells.

Bluebells are nice. They are very pretty and underrated. They signify humility, gratitude, and constancy. They are, in fact, my favourite flower.

If I were asked, “What is your favourite flower?” I would sometimes tell them to take a guess.

“Roses. You seem like the type of girl who loves roses.”

“Sunflowers.”

“Dandelions.”

“Tulips.”

But they’re not.

I LOVE BLUEBELLS.

Not because they are pretty to me or because they signify something society wants to see in everyone: humility, gratitude, and constancy.

Bluebells are underrated, and although they carry these meanings, I see them from my own point of view. That is why I love them.

I see bluebells as women in society who are told to be obedient to the other gender while still looking pretty.

I see bluebells as people who have been weighed down by the pressures of society and home, yet are expected to appear alright.

Humility?

Gratitude?

Constancy?

Words society uses to force its own ideologies upon us while still expecting us to be okay.

“It’s okay not to be okay.”

But sometimes, why can’t we just be okay without first having to be not okay?

We survive while trying to look pretty.

We survive even when the burdens seem too heavy to carry.

We survive while being weighed down by societal norms, culture, values, and beliefs.

They expect us to appear okay.

Alright.

Pretty.

And even when we try to appear at our best, we do not do it to be noticed like roses and daisies.

Perhaps I love bluebells because they do not demand to be noticed.

They simply bloom

even when they are under pressure.
