Did somebody say unemployed graduate?

Yesterday, I graduated with a BSc in Accounting at 19—a milestone that should feel like a triumph. Instead, I’m staring at my empty inbox, wondering why my degree hasn’t magically unlocked a job offer. The reality? I’m part of the "unemployed graduate" club, a title that stings more than I expected.

Society sells us a linear path: study hard, graduate, land a job. But the script often skips the messy middle—the applications ghosted, the "entry-level" roles demanding three years of experience, the quiet panic of watching peers seemingly glide into careers. For young women, especially, there’s added pressure: "You’re too young," "You need more qualifications," or worse, the assumption that ambition is naivety.

But here’s what I’m learning: unemployment isn’t failure; it’s friction. It’s the space where resilience is built, where networking becomes intentional, and where we question whether we’re chasing passion or just paychecks. At 19, time is my ally. Maybe this gap isn’t a blank page but a drafting table—to upskill, explore industries, or even pivot entirely.

So to every graduate refreshing LinkedIn in despair: You’re not behind. You’re recalibrating. The degree isn’t a ticket—it’s a tool. And the unemployment chapter? It’s just the prologue.

—A 19-year-old accountant (pending)
