EMOTIONAL SICKNESS

Lets talk about Emotional Sickness.

Sounds unofficial right? Yea... It is not a medical term,... but The Eminent taught me this.

The first time I heard that word was in a classroom-Civic Education. We were discussing the causes of cultism and a guy stood up to mention "Emotional Sickness". It sounds weird and in some way, funny, because most of my classmates then burst out laughing. Why emotional sickness? I only use to know of emotional distress

But then, the teacher in charge gave him chance to explain and when the guy did, I had moments of truth from all he explained that day and that pushed me into writing this.

Emotional Sickness isn't an official medical term but people often use it to mean struggle with mental health and emotions that make life seem difficult. Basically, it's when emotional strain last long that it starts to affect how you think, feel and function.

As students, life can be exciting but full of pressure when Examinations, Money, Family, Expectations and Social life [in host of others] set in. These are the major triggers of Emotional Sickness. When strains of each of these gets overbearing without no outlet, it can and will lead to Emotional Sickness. A student whose school fees are paid late may feel shame and constant worry. To concentrate during lectures will be difficult because such student will be thinking"What if I'm sent home, then, failing my exams?". Similar to this is a student whose family is expecting "first class results". And when the pressure becomes too high, the student develop constant anxiety, sleepless nights and even panic attacks before exams.

Have you ever find yourself feeling sad continuously, going hyper-anxious or getting angry even at little things? Transferring aggression has gradually turned to Habit, if not personality. You lose interest in things you once enjoy. Sleeping becomes an Herculean task. You constantly complain of headaches and fatigue with no clear medical cause. And, some ladies will say they have what?mood swings. Dearest, you are suffering from Emotional Sickness!!!

Just like physical sickness, Emotional Sickness is real and treatable. If it's uncared for, it can get worse and affect work, school, physical health and relationships with others. However, when it is attended to, it can be managed gradually till things are back to normal.

The question now is "How can it be managed?".

My dear reader, first of, is Journaling. Someone would have been expecting "Talk to a friend", yes, you can but only trusted and matured ones, not the one that will use you as content idea for her next content on Social media. Asides Friends, you can talk to a family, a lecturer or a school counselor. Don't keep things to yourself, let people in too.

And, if you can't trust friends, pick a book, talk to it. Book cannot shout, neither can it expose you. Only if you can keep it properly. Journaling is one of the best therapy. When you journal, you feel lighter because you just found what can share the same burden as you.

Another strategy is Sleep, yes, sleep.

Stop using the time you have to rest to doomscroll or get yourself engaged. Take your rest, yea, but not in excess. Dominate it.

And if you believe these won't work for you, solicit a professional support-visit a therapist or trained psychologist.

Conclusively, Emotional Sickness is real and common. In most cases, Academic pressure, financial strain and social expectations are the major triggers. Then, the key is to notice early and share with a trusted and matured individual. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as reading for your exams, because a healthy mind learns better
