Everyone Was Certain… But Everyone Was Wrong

There was a rumor going around that everyone seemed to believe. It started with one person, then another person repeated it, and before long, almost everybody had heard the story.

The funny thing was that nobody actually knew where it came from.

Whenever someone asked about it, people would say, “I heard it from someone who knows,” or “Everybody knows that's what happened.”

So naturally, I believed it too.

One day, I decided to find out what actually happened. I asked a few questions, checked the details, and followed the story back to where it supposedly started.

And that's when I discovered something completely unexpected.

The original story wasn't even what people were saying.

A small detail had been misunderstood, someone added their own assumption, another person repeated it differently, and eventually the whole thing became a completely different story.

It made me realize something: a story doesn't become true just because hundreds of people repeat it.

Sometimes people aren't lying—they're simply repeating information they never verified.

Since then, I've become much more careful about believing things just because they're popular.

Because honestly, the most dangerous part of a rumor isn't that someone started it…

It's that everyone else can help it grow without ever checking whether it's true.
