HOW WE ARE WIRED UP

“You are an unfortunate woman whose life is as promiscuous as your mother’s. You better not influence our daughter too.”

“And you are a bastard man who beats his wife like a goat. I regret the day I married you.”

This was the air we breathed. A domestic violence home.

This is how we were wired. Fear made our decisions for us, even in our own relationships.

Don’t blame us. Only matured men can handle us.

“How dare you walk away when I am not done talking to you, -gamb-!”

Father’s hand landed on her face.

“You good-for-nothing, unfortunate human being. You slapped me, and that hand shall never hold any favor again.”

You judge me for walking away while you talk.

Sometimes I don’t want to leave. But it’s how I was wired.

I wish I could give you peace and love. Sometimes I just can’t control it.

“Ojo is coming! Ojo is coming!”

In the street, -Ojo- means police. We ran from one hood to another.

I became successful, but my woman complains I’m not romantic.

She doesn’t know my life is wired for running from danger to danger.

“Stop crying like a baby! Are you not a man?” his mother shouted.

“Do you want people to laugh at you in this house?”

He stood there, tears halfway down his face.

He swallowed them before they could disgrace him.

My wife says I don’t talk about my feelings. That I act like I don’t care when things hurt me.

How do I tell her I learned early to hide pain before it even showed?

So now I feel everything.

But I say nothing.

“Hey, have you seen my lovely husband and I this morning?”

“Oh sorry, Mother. Good morning to you and your lovely husband.”

My wife says I’m romantic.

She doesn’t know it’s just how I was wired.

“I blessed the day you walked into my life and changed everything.

It is hurtful that you are unreachable now.

May your soul rest in peace.”

I was raised badly, but I chose to live well.

Then death took the joy of my life.

Now I live with this broken heart.

Knowing the root cause of a person’s pain solves half the problem.

People grow up in unimaginable ways. Be kind in how you approach them.

Every person you judge was formed by what life wired them through first.

If you can’t make their life better, leave them alone.
