Memories in the Dark

I don’t know if I can remember it,

just shadows,

memories of memories

of what might have happened.

A shape lodged in my throat,

an insistent voice beside me:

Good girl.

It started small,

kisses stolen in the dim kitchen light,

a push on the couch,

noodles, meat, a kiss.

Then his weight,

on top of me.

I was too young to resist,

too ignorant to know

I was supposed to.

Now the memories rot

like termite-eaten wood,

their hollows echoing questions:

Was it rape? Assault? Abuse?

I ask each night

as my bunk creaks beneath me.

And what’s to do about it now?

What is left of me

if not the shadows I carry,

the shape of him in my throat,

the voice that still whispers,

Good girl.
