Memory Is a Terrible Witness
<p>Memory is a terrible witness<br/></p><p>
</p><p>and yet we keep relying on it.
</p><p>
</p><p>Who hurt us.
</p><p>
</p><p>Who loved us.
</p><p>
</p><p>Who left us.
</p><p>
</p><p>Who said what.
</p><p>
</p><p>We know we remember it all
</p><p>
</p><p>but memory is a fickle thing.<br/></p><p>
</p><p>It keeps the hurt
</p><p>
</p><p>drops the date.</p><p>
</p><p>changes the face… but somehow manages to always remember the feeling.</p><p><br/></p><p>
</p><p>Ask two people what happened in the same fight and they will tell you two completely different stories.</p><p>
</p><p>Same night.</p><p>
</p><p>Same room.</p><p>Same words.</p><p>
</p><p>Or at least,</p><p>what they think are the same words.</p><p>
</p><p>And neither of them is lying.
</p><p>
</p><p>Because memory doesn't record
</p><p>
</p><p>It edits.
</p><p><br/></p><p>
</p><p>It adds a little something here
</p><p>
</p><p>takes a little something there
</p><p>
</p><p>changes a “I think” to “I know”</p><p>
</p><p>a “maybe” to “I’m sure”.</p><p><br/></p><p>
</p><p>Sometimes we forget the facts
</p><p>
</p><p>but remember the feelings.</p><p>
</p><p>Forget the events …</p><p>but remember the aftermath.</p><p>
</p><p>Forget what was said …</p><p>but remember what was done to us.</p><p><br/></p><p>
</p><p>And then,</p><p>years later we stand in a courtroom and memories are used as evidence </p><p>forgetting that our witness has been editing the evidence</p><p>
</p><p>Maybe that is why two people can walk away from the same event with two completely different stories.
</p><p>
</p><p>One remembering the betrayal.</p><p>
</p><p>The other the misunderstanding.</p><p>
</p><p>One remembering the silence.</p><p>
</p><p>The other the other remembers giving space.</p><p>
</p><p>One remembering what was said.</p><p>
</p><p>The other remembering what they heard.</p><p>
</p><p><br/></p><p>And the most terrifying thing about memory is that it can make you feel certain</p><p>
</p><p>without making you correct.</p><p>
</p><p><br/></p><p>So maybe memory isn’t a recording.</p><p>Maybe it’s a storyteller.</p><p>And storytellers…</p><p>choose sides.</p>
