<p style="text-align: justify; ">Plot. All writers should know what that is. I am not going in the direction you think I am. But for today's mini-essay, credit goes to author Tade Thompson, as these are his words:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">"Plot is the path the writer chooses to pass through the story.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Implications:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">-Intentionality. The writer makes deliberate decisions. This way, not that.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">-The plot is not the whole story. Think of an apple after a caterpillar has tunnelled.</p><p style="text-align: justify; ">-Revision can change the plot without changing story.</p><p style="text-align: justify; ">- Readers generally know there is more to any story. Dissatisfaction can result from a mourning of the unexplored aspects that a particular reader might want.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">-The apple metaphor is useful because after some writer (worm) has been through it, someone else working through the same apple might not be as satisfying because it's not as fresh as when the first worm breached the pristine apple.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">-Criticism can go awry here, because</p><p style="text-align: justify;">a person might think,'I would have</p><p style="text-align: justify;">taken another path'. That's possible, but good criticism examines the path taken through the story first/foremost.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;">What is the story?</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Every conceivable aspect. All the</p><p style="text-align: justify;">possible characters that are directly or tangentially involved. Every possible point of view. All consequences. All possible environments. Every fold of spacetime.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The writer's job is to choose. If</p><p style="text-align: justify;">effective, the choices evoke the whole.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;">This affects you, even if you're not a</p><p style="text-align: justify;">writer (or reader).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Narrative is everywhere. In witness</p><p style="text-align: justify;">statements, insurance declarations,</p><p style="text-align: justify;">science, report writing, in the news, in religion etc.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">You can detect and understand discrepancies that have real world consequences if you understand plot/story."</p>
At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
