"Raping festival" Should Never Be A Phrase We Have To Say

Last week, in Ozoro, Delta state, Nigeria a festival took place. It's called the Alue-Do festival. The festival involves any woman that was caught outside being assaulted by a crowd of men.

When I heard this, I thought what I felt was anger, but no it was disgust. Disgust towards those who formed such a formidable festival. Disgust towards the men who participated in such a barbaric act.

It's the twenty first century for goodness' sake. I can't consider this festival culture amongst people, it's assault on women.

The people said they warned the women not to come outside. I don't care if you did. You're infringing on their fundamental rights, which is the right to freedom. The women should stay inside but the men can go out looking for women to victimize? This festival was just a guise for men to assault women, and then deem it culture.

Tradition and culture are expected to be beautiful. Things people outside our country see and go, "Wow". Things that impact people's life, teach them about their roots, make them see their culture as something beautiful and something to talk proudly about. Not something that victimizes women. Do you know how many people will feel ashamed to come from such a place?

I did hear some of the people involved in the horrifying act have been caught. The remaining should be jailed and serve their trial. Such men shouldn't be allowed to walk scot-free.

"Raping festival" was something I thought I would never hear.

And such festivals or tradition should cease to exist immediately! Any culture that infringes on anyone's rights, looks for a way to abuse men or women, or anything at all that cause damages should be put to an end.
