<h4 style="text-align: center; "><strong>Robotics: Building Smarter and Safer Communities — Part 2</strong></h4><p><br/></p><p>When we talk about robotics, many people immediately imagine humanoid robots from movies, advanced machines, or even a future where robots do everything humans do. But when I think about robotics, I see something different. I see an opportunity to solve real problems in our communities. In Part 1, I talked about how robotics can help build smarter and safer communities. This time, I want to look at some real examples of countries and people who have contributed to robotics and how the technology is already changing lives.</p><p><br/></p><p>Japan is one country that has taken robotics seriously. Because Japan has a large ageing population, robots are being developed to assist elderly people with daily activities and support healthcare workers. Some robots can help patients move around, while others can provide reminders or simple assistance. Japan has also produced companies such as Fanuc, which has become a major name in industrial robotics. I find this interesting because it shows that robotics is not only about replacing humans. It can also be about helping people when there are not enough workers available.</p><p><br/></p><p>South Korea is another country where robotics is becoming part of everyday life. Robots are being used in factories, hospitals, restaurants, and other industries. In manufacturing, robots can handle repetitive tasks with high precision, helping companies increase production and reduce certain workplace risks. South Korea's focus on robotics also shows how countries can invest in technology to prepare for the future instead of waiting until problems become bigger.</p><p><br/></p><p>The United States has also played an important role in the development of modern robotics. George Devol created one of the first industrial robots, while Joseph Engelberger is widely known for helping develop the industrial robotics industry. Their work helped prove that robots could become useful tools in factories and industries.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another important person in modern robotics is Rodney Brooks. His research and contributions helped push robotics forward, and he was also involved in the creation of iRobot, the company known for developing robots for everyday use. These people may not have known exactly how far robotics would go, but their ideas helped create a foundation for the technology we see today.</p><p><br/></p><p>Even though countries like Japan, South Korea, and the United States are ahead in many areas of robotics, I believe Africa also has huge opportunities. We may not always need to copy exactly what other countries are doing. Our communities have different problems, so our robotic solutions can also be different.</p><p><br/></p><p>For example, agriculture is one area where robotics could make a major difference. Farmers could use drones and automated systems to monitor crops, identify areas that need attention, and improve productivity. In a country like Nigeria, where agriculture is important, technology could help farmers make better decisions and reduce some of the stress involved in managing large farms.</p><p><br/></p><p>Robotics can also improve safety. Drones and robotic systems can help during emergencies by reaching dangerous or difficult locations. They can be used to inspect damaged buildings, monitor areas affected by disasters, or support rescue operations. Instead of immediately sending people into every dangerous situation, technology can sometimes help gather information first.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another area is healthcare. In some communities, hospitals and medical centres are under pressure because there are not enough workers or enough equipment. Robotic systems cannot replace doctors and nurses, but they can support them. Automation can help with repetitive tasks, while remote technology can allow specialists to provide support from far away.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nigeria, My Dear Country, Where Are You?</p><p><br/></p><p>When I look at countries like Japan, South Korea, and the United States, one question comes to my mind: Nigeria, my dear country, where are you?</p><p><br/></p><p>Nigeria has brilliant young people, creative engineers, programmers, and students with big ideas. We have problems that robotics and mechatronics could help address, from agriculture and healthcare to manufacturing and waste management. But we need more investment, better laboratories, stronger research programmes, and more opportunities for young people who are interested in building things.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nigeria should not wait until every other country has developed the technology before we decide to participate. We need to start building our own solutions for our own problems. Maybe the next important robotic solution will not come from Japan, South Korea, or America. Maybe it will come from a young Nigerian with an idea, a laptop, a few components, and the determination to build something useful.</p><p><br/></p><p>As someone interested in mechatronics, I believe robotics is one of the fields that can connect ideas with real-life solutions. Mechatronics combines mechanical systems, electronics, programming, and automation. This means an idea can move from being just a concept to becoming a working machine that solves a problem.</p><p><br/></p><p>The future of smarter and safer communities will not be built by technology alone. Humans still need to decide how technology is used. But if we use robotics responsibly, we can create communities that are safer, more productive, and better prepared for challenges.</p><p><br/></p><p>In my opinion, the question is no longer whether robotics will become part of our lives. It already is. The bigger question is whether we will only watch the future happen or become part of the people building it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nigeria, my dear country, where are you? The future of robotics is moving, and I believe we should not be left behind.</p>
