My Unpopular opinions of Social Media.

I Really Hate Social Media

Wait, hear me out.

I'm not saying this from a place of pride or superiority.

But honestly, if it were possible, I'd have nothing to do with social media.

Ironically, I'm a die-hard fan of technology. I've invested so much of my time and energy into learning it, understanding it, and building with it.

Yet, despite all that, I still don't like social media.

I can't even pinpoint the exact reason.

Maybe it's because I know how it works. I understand the psychology behind it; the countless design decisions made to keep you scrolling, clicking, and spending as much time on the platform as possible.

I've spent enough time studying technology and its evolution that whenever I find myself spending too much time on social media, something inside me starts to feel uncomfortable.

"You're too uptight."

"Live a little."

"It's just a way to unwind."

"It doesn't mean you're addicted."

I've heard these statements countless times whenever I express my concerns about social media.

And maybe they're right... at first.

You open the app just to unwind.

Then you start relying on it every time you want to relax.

Before long, you can't unwind without it.

Then WHAT?

Not to sound self-righteous (well... maybe just a little), but that's often how addiction begins.

Social media has quietly taken a lot from people.

The scary part is that many don't even realize it's happening.

You wake up in the morning and the first thing you open is social media,

You spend time on social media instead of doing something more productive,

You make decisions based on what your favorite celebrity on social media say, wear or do.

Sorry but I'll rather read a book if I really want to dewind.

One thing that has never sat right with me is knowing that while I'm endlessly scrolling, someone else is making money from my attention while I'm gaining almost nothing in return.

It reminds me of something a lecturer once said in one of our lectures:

"The development of Europe came at the expense of the underdevelopment of Africa."

I'm not trying to compare the two situations directly.

The point is that value is often created because someone else is giving something away.

In this case, it's my attention.

These platforms become more valuable the longer I stay on them, while I often walk away with nothing to show for the hours I've lost.

That thought has never sat comfortably with me.

It's one of the reasons so many people have decided to become creators instead of remaining consumers.

And I think that's a smart move.

If you're going to spend hours on a platform, why not create value from it?

But even then, I think differently.

Personally, I'd rather own Meta than build my career creating content on one of its apps.

I'd rather own the platform than depend on it.

Well that's just my unpopular opinion.
