<p>I Really Hate Social Media</p><p><br/></p><p>Wait, hear me out.</p><p><br/></p><p>I'm not saying this from a place of pride or superiority.</p><p><br/></p><p>But honestly, if it were possible, I'd have nothing to do with social media.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ironically, I'm a die-hard fan of technology. I've invested so much of my time and energy into learning it, understanding it, and building with it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Yet, despite all that, I still don't like social media.</p><p>I can't even pinpoint the exact reason.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maybe it's because I know how it works. I understand the psychology behind it; the countless design decisions made to keep you scrolling, clicking, and spending as much time on the platform as possible.</p><p><br/></p><p>I've spent enough time studying technology and its evolution that whenever I find myself spending too much time on social media, something inside me starts to feel uncomfortable.</p><p><br/></p><p>"You're too uptight."</p><p>"Live a little."</p><p>"It's just a way to unwind."</p><p>"It doesn't mean you're addicted."</p><p><br/></p><p>I've heard these statements countless times whenever I express my concerns about social media.</p><p><br/></p><p>And maybe they're right... at first.</p><p><br/></p><p>You open the app just to unwind.</p><p>Then you start relying on it every time you want to relax.</p><p>Before long, you can't unwind without it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then WHAT?</p><p><br/></p><p>Not to sound self-righteous (well... maybe just a little), but that's often how addiction begins.</p><p><br/></p><p>Social media has quietly taken a lot from people.</p><p>The scary part is that many don't even realize it's happening.</p><p>You wake up in the morning and the first thing you open is social media,</p><p>You spend time on social media instead of doing something more productive,</p><p>You make decisions based on what your favorite celebrity on social media say, wear or do.</p><p>Sorry but I'll rather read a book if I really want to dewind.</p><p><br/></p><p>One thing that has never sat right with me is knowing that while I'm endlessly scrolling, someone else is making money from my attention while I'm gaining almost nothing in return.</p><p><br/></p><p>It reminds me of something a lecturer once said in one of our lectures:</p><p>"The development of Europe came at the expense of the underdevelopment of Africa."</p><p><br/></p><p>I'm not trying to compare the two situations directly.</p><p><br/></p><p>The point is that value is often created because someone else is giving something away.</p><p>In this case, it's my attention.</p><p><br/></p><p>These platforms become more valuable the longer I stay on them, while I often walk away with nothing to show for the hours I've lost.</p><p><br/></p><p>That thought has never sat comfortably with me.</p><p><br/></p><p>It's one of the reasons so many people have decided to become creators instead of remaining consumers.</p><p>And I think that's a smart move.</p><p><br/></p><p>If you're going to spend hours on a platform, why not create value from it?</p><p><br/></p><p>But even then, I think differently.</p><p><br/></p><p>Personally, I'd rather own Meta than build my career creating content on one of its apps.</p><p>I'd rather own the platform than depend on it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Well that's just my unpopular opinion.</p>
At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.

Most Engaged Content
The Most Engaged Content recognizes users whose content received the most engagement during the month.
We pick the top 3.
The winners are picked using the "Top Monthly Contributors" tab on the rankings page.
Contributor Rankings
The Rankings/Leaderboard shows the Top 20 contributors and engagers on TwoCents a monthly and all-time basis
— as well as the most active colleges (users attending/that attended those colleges)
The all-time contributors ranking is based on the Contributor Score, which is a measure of all the engagement and exposure a contributor's content receives.
The monthly contributors ranking tracks performance of a user's insights for the current month. The monthly and all-time scores are calcuated DIFFERENTLY.
This page also shows the top engagers on an all-time & monthly basis.
