Signs and Lights

If the traffic light didn't have red, we probably wouldn't know when to stop.

If the traffic light didn't have yellow, we probably wouldn't know when to get ready to move.

If the traffic light didn't have green, we probably wouldn't know when to start.

So we appreciate green flags because we've seen the red ones.

We value peace because we've survived chaos.

I guess that's why you never truly know what you have until it's gone.

And sometimes I wish life were as easy as a traffic light.

After all, we often say we have different destinations. So surely there should be signposts along the way... shouldn't there?

Because most times we see STOP, ROAD CLOSED, RESTRICTED AREA, DANGER AHEAD, BLIND CORNER, DEAD END, and NO U-TURN.

Yet we keep going.

Hoping the NO U-TURN somehow becomes a U-TURN. Hoping that by the time it's our turn, the road will be open.

We see the red lights flashing in people, and suddenly we're color-blind.

Every warning becomes a misunderstanding.

Every flash becomes a maybe.

Every red becomes a green.

We read DANGER AHEAD, yet enter body, soul, and spirit first.

We see RESTRICTED AREA, but somehow believe love has made us VIPs.

Until one day, we realize the signs were never there to stop us from loving.

They were there to stop us from crash-landing.

To stop us from emotional wreckage.

Because accidents hardly ever involve just one person.

The signs were there to protect us and those around us.

So the next time the traffic light turns red...

STOP.

The next time you see NO U-TURN...

TURN AROUND.

Because sometimes,

going back to square one

is far better

than moving forward

to minus one.
